igoogle

Gadgets

I have been adding and removing gadgets. Some useful stuff eg Digital NZ pretty cool, but way too much other dross. Too many google gadgets, most of which are pretty pointless.
Igoogle useful way of keeping stuff together but very slow to load today.

Adding a google gadget

Passing on Google docs

Have completed my first Pass-it-on about google docs. This ended up being a bit of a explore of google in general but did manage to cover docs, sharing of docs and how useful this might be for our customers.

KRIS

Online repositories for research output was a big push when I worked at CPIT and CU. It is a pretty cool idea.
It should be noted how reluctant some academics were to deposit their work. The project is limited by the willingness of the participants. Participation does encourage more participation however.

Library sites improving with 2.0 tech

It is good to look at how library websites are making info available. Canterbury University have updated their site a lot in the last year using wikis, facebook, libguides and subject blogs. I like libguides as a way of providing subject info (we could use this product!!!)

Learning, even the traditional lecture or class kind, is becoming more online with information, readings, assignments, forums etc being provded in this way.

Lots of blogs

Local govt and community groups seem to be getting right into blogging. You can't read them all!
Public feedback forums eg CCC or WCC are a good way of reaching people.

If you are looking for community events, setting up an RSS feed to new info on your local city council or events site is a good idea or using their blogs eg NZLive.com.

I think I'll stick to CCC as a favourite and search the site for anything I want to know...

Govt aggregate sites are great!

I really like a "one-stop-shop" approach to finding govt info on a topic. The NZ Govt website is OK but I really like www.business.govt.nz. This is a fantastic website that is really helpful for business customers in the library. I also really like, and use a lot, how Statistics NZ link to other Govt websites for statistics ie when using Statisphere and Infoshare.

Librarything

I hadn't really thought about using library thing because it is such a lot of work to get all my books (lots!) into it. I would like them to instantly be there if possible!?

I can think of at least 2 clubs/ organisations that I belong to that could use this ..
but there is never enough time..

Google revisited...

While zoho looks pretty good I have stuck with google docs as I seem to be using so many google products already..

This is really useful in the library as our customers will be able to save their work without needing a USB or CD. They will however need to make the time to save before the end of their hour!

I really like google docs - very simple and easy to use with file storage in the cloud...

Forgot to cut and paste into my blog so am doing that now. Very easy..

Likes and dislikes...

Having joined Facebook and Ning and having looked at Delicious I appreciate how useful these could be.

Ning - really useful for groups eg clubs or a work project groups or colleagues not at the same location.
Facebook - this is not for me at the moment. I'll have to wait for a "need" such as Wendy in keeping in touch/up-to-date with family and friends. For me, I don't like the "publicness" of it. I even used a madeup name.

Delicious - I think this is useful for those of us who share computers at work.

I have to say that there are huge possibilities but I like my old-fashioned system of email alerts (rather than RSS - even for database searching!), using email (own domain name) for most things plus favourites on home computer. Might have to think of a better system for work though. The possibilities are endless...

Social networking..

I have now joined Facebook. Disliking public spectacles, the readings have reinforced my prejudice against permanent public statements about yourself - I prefer a "private" life!

My children couldn't believe I would have a Facebook account (they are 11 and 13) and suggested various play-on-names finally settling on Sue Nami so that is it for now...

Ning here I come...

The google world

I now have igoogle, google reader and gmail - google is certainly all encompassing!
Time constraints this week have been an issue though and I am trying to use the hour before our CCLlearn gathering to catch up a little.

I think I need to now cull the number of rss feeds I have set up as I'd never have time to read or listen to everything. There is a big risk of information overload.

too many decisions

So far this is fun but its hard to make so many decisions about modules and templates and what to write! Using stuff is quite a different concept from doing stuff!
